In my previous post, I noted that the 21-member ALS Strategic Planning Team had recently completed the last of three all-day planning retreats. Out of that process a set of five Goals emerged that will be a foundation of the new ALS Strategic Plan that should be substantially completed by the end of this year.

The five goals:

Goal #1:   To build stronger relationships among member libraries, increasing collaborative endeavors and resource sharing.

Goal #2:   To advance the introduction and efficient use of new and proven technology in member libraries.

Goal #3:   To expand regional capacity in services that build and support literacy development and enthusiasm for learning among children of all ages (Birth-High School).

Goal #4:   To increase and improve professional skills and knowledge among library staff.

Goal #5:   To support efforts that increase resources for library services.

We have now established five “goal teams” that will work on action planning for each of the above goals.

The Team for Goal #1 consists of three ALS Board members (Steve Bean, Amanda Houle, Christopher Welter) and three ALS staff (Chris Carlson, Shari Fisher, Jim Weikum).

The Team for Goal #2 consists of Nancy Riesgraf (Hibbing Public Library), Will Richter (Grand Rapids Public Library), and four ALS staff (Mark Koukol, Robert Sundstrom, Shari Fisher, and Jim Weikum).

The Team for Goal #3 consists of Susan Schumacher (Duluth Public Library), Dawn Heisel (Virginia Public Library), Gigie Harder (Falls High School), and three ALS staff (Melody Dane, Shari Fisher, and Jim Weikum).

The Team for Goal #4 consists of Renee Zurn (Duluth Public Library), Nicole Miller (Gilbert Public Library), and four ALS staff (Mark Koukol, Chris Carlson, Shari Fisher, and Jim Weikum). 

The Team for Goal #5 consists of two ALS Board members (Rob Ecklund and Tom Hanson), Mary Lukkarila (Cloquet Public Library), Carla Powers (Duluth Public Library), and three ALS staff (Jennifer Ancel, Shari Fisher, and Jim Weikum).

In addition to the five Goal team, also now established is Planning Oversight Team that will oversee the balance of the planning process and provide
guidance relating to strategies and action planning. The Oversight Team
consists of three ALS Board members (Lenore Johnson, Marge McPeak, Steve
Bean) and three ALS administrative staff (Shari Fisher, Mark Koukol,
and Jim Weikum).

There is still quite a bit of work to be done before the planning process is completed, but the Oversight Team is already meeting, Goal Team meetings start next week, and the entire process is moving forward. My gratitude is extended to all of the people devoting so much of their time. Thank you!
