We here at the Arrowhead Library System were saddened at the passing of former Congressman Jim Oberstar. In May 2001, I traveled to Washington, D.C. for National Library Legislative Day. My family joined me as we visited Congressional offices, and we had the pleasure of meeting with Congressman Oberstar over lunch. He spent most of the lunch chatting with my three children. He shared with us that he didn’t get to spend enough time with his grandchildren, but that he loved to read books to them by reading into a tape recorder and sending the recordings when he could not be present himself. He was a strong library supporter and he will be sadly missed. We extend our condolences to his family and his many friends.
