ALS Loses a Former Leader

Kenneth Ray Nielsen, 91, died peacefully on September 30, 2018, at his home in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Ken came to the Arrowhead Library System in 1972 where he served as Assistant Director, Acting Director and finally, from 1977 until his retirement in 1992, as Director.  A WWII veteran, Ken earned an undergraduate degree in History and Masters degrees in History and Library Science. One of Ken’s former employees at ALS shared this recollection:

Ken wasn’t often ruffled as an administrator, and often gave me advice in a most low key manner. “You know,” he observed, “a lot of things in my in basket resolve themselves with time.” Consternation for him came out as, “if it’s not one thing it’s two things.”

A memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 6 at noon at Bauman-Cron Funeral Home in Virginia. Inurnment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia, Minnesota. A gathering time for family and friends will begin one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials are the preferred way to honor Ken’s memory.
