IRHS’s 46th annual meeting to feature stories of Iron Range WWII fallen heroes

Hometown Focus |

EVELETH — The Iron Range Historical Society will hold its 46th annual meeting on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Mesabi Trailhead Station located at 111 Station 44 Road in Eveleth. The program for this year’s meeting will be highlighted by authors Jill and Deane Johnson, who will share the stories of some of the Iron Range’s World War II fallen heroes.

Their recent book, “Little Minnesota in WWII,” details the histories of 140 soldiers from Minnesota’s smallest communities who gave their lives in service to their country. Most had never traveled far from their small towns, yet World War II found them serving in all corners of the globe.

Included are stories of four men from the tiny McKinley/Elcor area: Lieutenant Lloyd Nicholas, Sergeant Rudolph Indihar, Private LeRoy Veralrud and Sergeant Robert Brady. A book sale and signing will follow the presentation.

The event is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served.

The Iron Range Historical Society office is located at 5454 Grand Ave. in McKinley. Office hours are Mondays and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. (other hours by appointment). The office can be reached at 218-749-3150.
